Dear ArtsEdNet Friends,
Most likely it was a coincidence, or the real Y2K bug, but I got hit
and my system crashed on my little i-Mac.
I was trying to fix a problem I had with my new Real Audio player by
deleting some old versions of the software.
I must have dumped the wrong stuff because I lost everything except for
a little blinking question mark ? ? ? ? ?
on my screen. That means I had to dig out the original software restore
discs and reboot. To make a long story short, after several failed
atempts to "restore in place" with no luck - I did a "clean" restore
wiping out everything. I'm back in operation now, but I've lost most
everything. I'm in the process of recreating my work. My last complete
backup was in May. The lesson is BACK UP EVERYTHING DAILY, I hope I
learn. I even lost a neat automatic back program that I had not gotten
around to using.
HELP !! What I need to ask from my friends out there is to sent me
your e-mail addresses again. The Getty list serve doesn't let that out
automatically as some lists do. This is a special request especially to
the teachers who said they had an interest in the "Living Artists
Collaborative Oral Research Project", it is not lost but my address book
and bookmarks are. Luckily I had recently done a back up on all of my
web pages. So taospaint, my school and my computer class work out there
on the web is still there and I have backups on discs.
I've spent most of the morning putting all my software back on the
computer like; printer, scanner, photo deluxe, screensaver, dreamweaver,
etc. So my advice to you is find out the best way to back up your stuff
daily and then do it. There are even servers out there that will
provide free space for backups that are helpful in case your house burns
down, dread the thought.
Anyway, let me hear from you as you begin the new year 2000 with
your students. I hope your year starts off better than mine. For 2 1/2
weeks Fran and I have had the flu, so I'm behind on everything. Now I
know what it is like to be a virgin again. At least the students will
be happy to know that the Y2K bug ate their tests. I won't have time to
reconstruct them cause the semester ends in ten days.
Happy New Year from Woody in KC
