Hi Cheryl,
Several years ago I taught in Northern Quebec at a school where all
the students were English second language. Their first languages were Cree
and French. It was a great experience for many reasons, but I found that
art was a really special subject to be teaching ESL students. While many of
these students struggled with English, art was truly a means of
communication, perhaps one of the only places in the curriculum where they
continually met with unqualified success. They were so enthusiastic that
they would break out in Cree and French whenever something interesting
happened, and I found myself picking up some of their language too. You
will get more relevant feedback from those in the ESL field now, but I
wanted to share this happy memory.
