Teaching art history helps answer that age old question: "Why?" In my
experience with students, they have always wanted to know "why", no matter
what you are teaching. Being able to connect an art experience with
history, and in turn with something that has touched our lives today in
some way, makes the lesson more relevant and memorable. People need to
know that art is more than just one of those "extra" classes that provides
amusement for the students and a break for the classroom teacher. I also
try as much as possible to incorporate art-based careers into my lessons -
it helps students see that art plays a huge role in our lives. Where would
we be today without advertisers, illustrators, designers, etc.?
