I had one particularly diverse opinion from a student about the meaning of
a painting that I now tell all my students because it's so clearly a
personal reflection. The painting is the Horozontal Tree by Mondrian
and I usually ask students what they see--typically they see a tree and
we discuss the fractured background, lines etc. etc. One time when the
slide flashed on a student shouted "take it off--I can't stand it" The
rest of us said what's the matter with you it's a tree in the rain and he
shouted no it's a giant crow that's just smashed into the windshield of
my car and he's all broken. I have never been able to see that painting
since then without shuddering. Everyone brings their own personal vision
of artwork regardless of what the artist intended. Sid
