I loved the example of the single grain of rice (inscribed with a
message in Chinese) as something that would lose its meaning if it
changed in size. During their discussion, did the students talk about
what they thought that meaning was?
I was not surprised to learn that the students were split when it came
to the question, "Who decides what a work of art means?" This is a
question that seems always to come up whenever we try to interpret
artworks.
Anyway, it sounds like Ellen had a good time talking about these issues
with her students.
By the way, there are some more ideas in the Classroom Forum at the end
of each part of every "Walk" in Philosophers Forum.
If you do try any of these with your students, please share their
comments with the rest of us.
Thanks so much.
