FUNCTIONALITY
I try to get my students to see that art is function, that drawing is little
more than a tool for learning, mapping out what one sees, for planning, etc.
Some of the most beautiful 3d forms I have ever seen are the funiture made by
the Shakers.
The funny thing is that with a piece of art like that, its function, its
entire raison d'etre, is obliterated when it is put behind glass in a museum,
where no one can use it.
