We are very lucky that my school has just installed a small art gallery for
use by the community. All of the art work we accept to show, must include a
"gallery talk" by the artist. They come in for the day and the children come
in for a 30-50 minute presentation by the artist. The students come in by
grade levels---k-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8. Many times the artist just takes
questions about their work. Sometimes they do a demonstration of their
painting, drawing or other media. We had a quilter come in with small pieces
of fabric and a sewing machine and she let the 8th graders make a "square"
piece for an 8th grade quilt that she will sew for them! Most often the
children LOVE asking questions of the artist, and of course the artists LOVE
to talk about their work. We have about 4 artists showing a year, with the
artists coming in to talk just one day.....It is a wonderful opportunity for
the children and the artists as well. It is a wonderful resourse for me as a
teacher to take the kids to the gallery to see "real art work".
