Interesting thread....our last name is Buerkle. Many "Americans" pronounce
is Burk-el. My husband is from Germany, however, and he pronounces it
Burk-ly. However, I still say VanGo. I had no idea there even was another
version until I watched a video on him. My art history profs in college
all said VanGo. The gutteral sound, however, doesn't really exist as part
of our alphabet..or language. Kind of like the rolled "r" in Spanish.
(Which I absolutely can't do for some reason.) But what do I know? I'm
from New Jersey.
