My favorite project for color mixing is preceded by what most of you
do...practice mixing the color relationship sets first like complementary,
etc. Next I have them go to the magazine table and find a good full page
with many colors (ads are fine and even colored cartoons). They then come
to my desk and I cut out a little trapezoid (approx. 1 1/2 x 2") with an
exacto knife and they keep the trapezoid for reference. They staple this
mag. page to 9x12" white paper. They are allowed only red, yell., blue,
black, white tempera (and an 0 brush) to reproduce the missing area. Talk
about learning how to use the complements to "tone down" colors...this
really works well. They work on this little quadralateral for nearly 3-4
days of intense color mixing. I've done colorwheels up the wazzu and I'm
not downing 'em but this project puts it all into action. Toodle-lou....
