Re: japanese clay project

Another clay project inspired by Japanese art would be Netsukes. They
are "story carvings from old Japan" that were worn by the Japanese from
17th to 19th centuries. These small porcelien sculptures hung on the
ends of the cord of their kimono. Many symbolize mythogical beings,
zodiac symbols, or a story, legend, or fairly tale. I had a lot of
bookmarks on Japanese Art and Netsuke but I lost it two weeks ago when
my computer crashed.

Give each 2nd grade student a 4" slice of a thick coil. Talk about the
subtractive method. Plastic knives and spoons will work to carve their
netsukes to represent a fairy tale or ghost tale.

I would appreciate any info from others who had heard about or done
netsukes with their students.
