Japanese clay rattles

There is a teacher at our local art league who made something similiar. If
I remember correctly, she made a tiny hole with a toothpick in the bottom
of the rattle so air could escape while firing. If I am right, then this is
a very important step which was not mentioned. Maybe a ceramics person
