Dear Ellyn,

>Where are the art teachers at the elementary level??? Regular education
>teachers rarely have the knowledge necessary for this? You are going to
>train them in 4 weeks what it took us 4 years to learn?

This is just the start of the program. Eventually there will be art
teachers at each of the elementary schools. This district has had volunteer
art docents in the elementary schools for several years (though the students
only see the docents once every three weeks), and quite a few of the
teachers in two of the elementary schools have art backgrounds or minors.

The arts are already included within a lot of classrooms, but at the
teachers' discretion and skill levels and interests. This program however
is designed to bring the education into a cohesive pattern, so that ALL the
students receive the same basics in art education - which leads to the
required courses at the middle school level - which leads to the required
courses at the high school. There will be extensive training and materials
for the teachers.

What is most important here is that the school board backs this plan - not
just with words but with $$$$, the administrators back it, and the teachers
do too.

Obviously, this is not a perfect plan - nothing ever is - but it is a heck
of a start and sure beats what we've had. :)
