With regard to the pathetic fallacy, (I am the one with the question about it) I just think it is fascinating when you become aware of some small detail, like the two people painted in the painting of the movie theatre to which I referred, which has the power to turn an idea on its head. I feel like it is a special “essence” which is the goal of many artists but which is so hard to get. Returning to meaning in architecture, there are so many huge buildings which are just huge buildings. That essence to which I refer is not in those buildings for me.
I was also the one who associated large buildings with privilege. . . I agree that the reverse effect can occur when one enters such a space. If you are feeling particularly underprivileged, a large impressive building can make you feel quite deprived. That would be your reference, Marcia, to alienation and anger. So the emotional state of the person experiencing the work often must have an effect on his/her preception or interpretation. It is difficult to think of any building which would have a consistent effect on the human experience of the space.
