1) Art is a REQUIRED subject here in Arizona... is it in MO? If it is,
just make it clear that it is as important as reading, math, etc., and
students are expected to be there unless prior arrangements are made.
Our school is supportive of this. If a teacher is holding kids back for
one reason or another, and it happens more than once, I let the
principal know. She puts a Reminder in the bulletin that the special
classes are required and all students must be there on time. That
usually does the trick.
2) Sometimes flexibility is needed. Perhaps the class could come during
a prep time instead? I do that when I have to miss an afternoon and
prefer to avoid the hassle of a substitute. Teachers see that I am
professional about letting them know ahead of time, and they usually let
me know too. In the hustle and bustle and minutia of planning a field
trip, it is easy to forget something. Our principal does post when a
class will be on a field trip in the daily bulletin. I really appreciate
Hope these thoughts help.
