It seems more like they concentrate on only the strengths they have
traditionally recognized and ignore the others no matter who is strong in
what. They love to quote Gardner, etc. However, they go on doing the same old
thing. Or they take the "new" idea and bastardize it until it is the same old
thing by a new name.
