I've seen some wonderful art pieces where students take an old book
that is in the discard category--repaint the cover--open the pages,
carve them out--paint or collage over some pages=--make them some
personal statement-perhaps put little objects into the carved out
areas. Really fun--basically all kids would like to deface their
textbooks big time and this is their chance. In our district truckloads
of school books and outdated films etc. hit the dump and were discovered
and made huge headlines in the local red-necked paper--waste--destruction
of public monies and properties etc. etc. Now the district requires all
trash instructional materials to be turned in to central office so they
can bury them in the dark or something. Sid
