Wet and set clay-Crayol

The kids did wonderful projects with this clay. It stuck together and let them
do difficult texures, etc. The problem was getting it to be hard. I called
the company and it said to soak it in cold water for 4-10 hours. But then I
found out it only hardens less than a inch on the outside. Pieces were falling
off all the time. And you had to wash it in hot water to get off the oil. It
said to use a mild soap. but there was still a residue of oil. I wanted to use
watercolors more as a stain. Anyone have any luck? Gail
