....I send home a letter at the first of each school year explaining
>this but every year I have parents complain.

.....................
Hi, Debbie....There's a way around this. At the first of the semester, I
send a policy sheet home explaining my grading scale, deadlines, losing
pts. for unexcused tardies, blah, blah....and at the bottom of the sheet I
make a return section which has to be signed by the parent and returned to
me via the student. Kids get 5 pts. if they return it the next day, 4th the
next, etc. I KEEP them in a drawer for just such an occasion as you
mentioned. If a parent complains later, I just pull out their signed
signature and it shuts them right up! I haven't had a one argue with me
after seeing their "John Henry" in my hot little
hand. I keep these signature slips for about a month after the grades are
mailed out for any such problem like this that might appear. It's
called..."CYA".

Toodles....
