I teach at a junior high school, 6th, 7th and 8th graders. I require my
students to bring a pencil and art folder to class each day. At different
times during each grading period I do a folder check. If the student came
to class prepared they recieved a 100 in the grade book and zero if they
did not. I send home a letter at the first of each school year explaining
this but every year I have parents complain. Once I had a parent call me
at home and told me her son didn't deserve the zero. She said, "Last night
he told me to go to the van to get the folder and I forgot." She said it
was her fault not his. She went on to say she didn't feel a junior high
student couldn't be held responsible for coming to class with a folder and
pencil.
One of these days that parent will regret not giving her sons
responsiblity. Unfortunately, there are many other parents in that same
situation.
