Right! We went through the five sentence paragraph, five paragraph paper, etc.
Then the next thing I know I have high school English teachers setting a
standard of three pages for a research paper. To me it sounds like lowering
the standards to meet the laziness of the students.
I often wondered how college people felt about the five paragraph/page thing.
I had honor students who were pathetic writers. I thought it was because of
the five paragraph thing. It looked like the English teachers tried to make
essays easier to grade. One fifth of it was spent repeating another one fifth.
Oh, and did I mention the students who wanted to know if the cover, table of
contents and bibliography counted in the three pages? I kid not.
We've moved away from the five paragraph thing but I think a lot of damage has
been done.
