Hi Mark--I also use a sketchbook, but it is more of a basic design book
with assigments due for each part. We work mostly on it during class
time but many do not get finished. I hate to let them take them home
because if they lose them--their grade is in deep trouble. They end
up being about 1/3 of their grade. I have a little trouble with people
trying to steal someone else's, but my worst problem with this is grading
them all at the end of the term. It takes about 10 hours of work. Our
district requires a failing notice if a student is getting a D or F and
when I have the books come in at the end of the term--some kids will
go from a low B or an F. I'm always surprized because the kids look
like they're very busy every day and I can't believe they have so
little done in the books. My big dilemma is that good students will
always succeed in all their classes--they have good brains, supporting
parents, clear goals and nice lives. They are the ultimate "school
boys and girls" and we love to teach them. We pay much lip service to
how important art is for dysfunctional students--and especially in
high school, art can be the only reason for some kids to come to school;
yet we structure grading systems that will sink them. I don't have an
answer to this problem--but I know that if I give a written test I
will drop the grade of all the poor students and raise the ego of the
honor's set. We don't want to be a dumping grounds, but we know that
the reason that art programs are pretty secure in the high school
setting is that they provide a place to dump kids with low skills who
need credits. Quandry!
