When I taught elementary art, the term special was used (we were "free
periods" for the classroom teachers.) Notice that they always can change
the schedule on a day someone is on a field trip so they don't
have their class miss their valuable "special" class. That's the reason.

Anyway, my first experience where specials were treated differently was in
1973 and the specials weren't to sit at the same tables in the faculty
room as the regular teachers; of course, the intermediate and primary were
also segregated. it was so funny. Sometimes we would be " bad" on in
service days when grades were due and we didn't grade every 9 weeks and
act like we were in no hurry to do anything. Always, fun to have fun. Fran
