Maybe I am a dreamer, but I believe everyone is Creative. My students
just need a nudge to let go of FEAR and take the great leap into the
unknown. Some kids are comfortable with this... others freak out. I
try to give some highly structured lessons to my third grade students.
They all think their work should look just like mine. I limit supplies
and if their creation is different, I make a big deal out of praising
the person who came up with a new solution to the situation.
Seems like the older people get, the more peer oriented they are, and
the less comfortable they are with taking a risk and dealing with
non-conformity. I see this transition in the kids who come to me as
third graders who will try anything, to fifth graders who are much
