Dear Jay,
I really appreciated your post. It is something I have thought about
frequently as I have also taught elementary aged children and high school.
I think the whole issue is out of our hands somewhat. I have seen children
lose their creativity over time through no pressure of the Arts. My guess
is that the whole system of evaluation, which is based on criticism and
comparison to their peers, just sinks into every aspect of their lives and
kills the joy of learning. New experiences are intimidating rather than
liberating.
