At the risk of being "blasted" for viewing my opinion, here goes. What if you
made an attempt to change your title from "specials" to "art teachers, art
instructors, etc." to reflect the same level of academic respect that the
other departments receive. When I reentered the teaching world about eight
years ago, I was amused by the title "specials"--conjured up images of Dana
Carvey's "Isn't that special?!!!" line from Saturday Night Live. In our
school, "specials" seemed to be a catch all category for anyone who didn't fit
into the "regular" curriculum----PE, Computers, Art, etc. If we're not part
of the "regular" society in school, I think this adds to the negative
attitudes and lack of support in our general society. This title is still
used a lot in our Lower School, but in the Upper School we insist on being
called the Art Department. Just one of those little quirks I have!
