Unfinished work--Elementary level

I teach in an elementary school, grades K-6, where I give grades to just
grades 4-6. I would be interesting in hearing from other elementary
teachers on what you do about unfinished work, if anything. I used to
tell all students in grades 4-6 that they had to finish all work for a
satisfactory grade, and would have them come in at recess time to finish
if they didn't have time in class. Now I more or less give them the
option to finish, but it does affect their grade. Sometimes students who
work very slowly end up doing really nice work when it finally is
finished. I hate to see really nice work go unfinished, but it really
is the student's responsibility. I guess what I want to know is do
other elementary teachers require work to be finished in the upper
grades? thanks for any thoughts.
