I have been teaching 25 years now, and the other night I had a dream.
I dreamt I was going to get rich by making a 4 foot by 6 foot neon sign
to be huge in classrooms. This sign would have too rows of letters on it.
The first row would spell "BAD"
The second row would spell "ATTITUDE"
When a student would start showing an attitude, I would just press the
button on my desk and lights and sirens would go off. The Lower letters
would flash on and off BIG TIME. It would be a real event. Only if the
student continued would I press the second button for "Bad". Then they
would both flash.
I told my next student with an attitude about it. She was very interested.
I told her I was pressing the button right now. REALLY HARD!!! She loved
it. She asked me if I was really going to get this sign. I told her "No,
not unless I wanted to quit my job real soon." Anyway, now all I have to
say is I am pressing my "attitude button now" with the appropriate hand and
arm motions and the kids get the message.
A little silly? After 25 years you have to be a little nuts to still enjoy
the classroom, and I still do.
Have a nice day in attitude land.
"Do Not." I repeat. "Do Not phone Linda Tripp or return her calls."
