Debbie, I do know the cause of the misbehavior of many of the worst
students in school. They almost universally come from horrible homes--
they are abused, drug-ridden, undernourished, unchaperoned and unloved.
The thing is--they are really hard to fix. Sometimes art is an anchor
to hold them up--and sometimes they are so messed up with their own
problems that doing my clever little assignment on self-portrait etc.
is too ridiculous to worry about. I always talk to the counselors
about them--usually their parents are their and our(school) worst
enemies. The courts won't take them away--or there is no foster
parent program. There is not enough we as a 48min/day teacher can
do unless they are willing to choose us to reach out to--and then you
are required by law to report any serious drugs or abuse (penalty is
jail time for you for not reporting). That breaks the confidence and
confirms their distrust of teachers. They need good homes, people who
love and care for them, security and lots of help but I can't do it
for them. Meanwhile, in spite of their bad hand in life they need to
learn to follow rules and treat materials and other people with respect
or they will be in jail, probably for the rest of their lives. I don't
have answers to what will save them, but meanwhile I have 30 other
kids who are willing to try and who deserve time and attention.
