We did this activity with a group of second and third graders. A double
batch was plenty for a class of 20.
RAINBOW STEW
1/3 c. sugar
1 c. cornstarch
4 c. cold water
Combine and heat until it thickens. Stir constantly. Cool. Divide into
three bowls. Add one color of food coloring (red, blue, yellow) to each
bowl. Store in large zip-lock bags.
Put one heaping plastic spoonful into each zip-lock sandwich baggie.
Students squeeze the mixture together to form different colors.
Some students mixed wildly without predicting what color they would get and
then were gleefully grossed out by the brown/gray.
