Sherry, For a serviceable alternative to Photoshop check out ColorIt!
at Microfrontier's Web site:

http://www.microfrontier.com/

ColorIt! does much of what Photoshop does, runs on very little RAM,
has 16 levels of undo, and costs a tenth of Photoshop. Certainly no
program
is "better" than Photoshop, but in a school setting ColorIt! may be more

appropriate. Download a free demo version from their Web site.

If you are looking for an entry-level paint program, check out PaintIt!
(also by Microfrontier). You can pick up a site license for pocket
change.
Both products are Mac only.
