This message responds to ArtsEdNet website Curriculum Issues Seminar on
Dr.Erickson's resource, Our Place In the World. One theme I have often
used is Nature. As a broad theme the rationale could be expressed in a
general statement: People of different cultures in different times and
places can find a common basis for understanding. And an art statement:
Themes in art can encourage people to see the world through different
eyes.Themes can be taken to more specific levels. Nature;Animals;The
Horse in Art. Students can see the possibilities involved by viewing
interpretations of the image of the horse. Motivating statement: Today
we will see how artists throughout time have interpreted a common theme
both literally and symbolically. Resources: Lascaux Paintings, Roman,
Greek or Chinese sculpture, American folk art(carousel horses), Degas,
Marc, Native American pictographs, contemporary George Littlechild and
Deborah Butterfield. Through the approach of each artists time and
place, we can see 'big ideas reflected in each image. .Dr.Erickson's Themes
promote and stimulate these connective ideas.
