It's an interesting thing about the power of praise. My mother, who at
the time was about 75yrs. old, decided to take a drawing class at the
local community college. He drawings were a great struggle and were
adequate but not good. She was very defensive and got furious with me
for making any suggestions. She didn't enjoy the class much so I was
quite surprised to hear that she had signed up for a sculpture class the
next semester. I said gee mom--if you could barely get through drawing
are you sure you want to tackle 3-d stuff?? Well, of course she blew
everyone in the class right out of the water--she carved an alabaster
oxen, made a wood carved fish, paper mache objects--you name it. It was
all great. I asked her how come she could do it all when she worried
and struggled so much with drawing. She just said--oh I knew I could
do it--when I was a little girl I used to make little things out of
clay and everyone told me how wonderful they were. That positive
bit of encouragement and confidence was still there 70 years later. It's
too bad we can't give pre-natal art courses to instruct future parents.
