To me, student teaching is a time to learn about teaching and the
professional aspects of being a teacher. An opportunity to practice, to try
out for the job. I think it would be the supervising teachers job to let
someone know if their chances of getting a job would be in jeopardy because
of dress or smell or some other personal aspect. I know everyone wants to
be a unique individual, and dress and personal habits shouldn't have
anything to do with one's abiltity to teach, but they do have an impact on
the person doing the hiring, as well as on the students. So it might be a
case of sacrificing individual identity, to some extent, in return for a
favorable job interview! Another way of looking at it would be that when
you are applying for a job, you want your intelligence and all your
wonderful teaching abilities to stand out - not be overpowered by your
dress or hairstyle,etc.
