Dear Dan,
Ken Rohrer gave excellant advise. A structure to work within is
needed. My added suggestions are emphise the positive. Catch them being
good! Give complements. You can catch more flies with sugar than with
vinegar. Put time limits on their work. ( If they have to finish the work
in a limited amount of time they don't have time to fool around. Involved
students who need more time to go the extra mile to put more into their
work usually do not mind spending the extra time doing the work as
homework.)
