The importance of young children being given the opportunity to draw
and make for themselves is generally misunderstood by the public.
Child art can contribute to the overall development. It is a
precuser for writing, it is another language system (we all "read"
symbols in adult life). By drawing, the child is putting in those symbols into
their intellectual program, to be called up in later years.
Making your own marks and having someone recognize the uniqueness
of them is a great self esteem builder.
The problem is that generally, most people want young children to
produce symbols that are adult directed which can lead later to the
"I can't draw" syndrome and the "that is why I don't like doing art".
