One assignment that I've had good luck with is "autobiographies" Using
the museum's portait collections, students write a short autobiography -
pretending they are the person in the portrait. They have to use the
hints in the portrait to give vital statistics - name, age, where they
are from, profession, monetary status, etc. Other questions to answere
include personality traits, what they are thinking about, how they feel
about the portrait - what they like or dislike about the way the artist
They are often lots of hints in the portrait - e.g. books might mean the
sitter is educated, teaches, practices law, etc. Homefurnishings
indicate monetary status.
