Regarding programs for graphic arts, I think that Dabbler is fun and has an
enjoyable interface. However, if you would like a little higher level of
options, try ColorIt!. Still an affordable program, but it has more options
similar to Photoshop. Speaking of programs like Photoshop, I think that even
students at an introductory level can learn the basic tools of a higher level
program that will allow them to build a foundation for computer graphics
skills that are in demand in the job market. I see no reason to shy away from
the major programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Fractal Painter and some of
the 3-D and Multimedia programs.
Going with a low level program limits your tools.
