As part of our research for Secondary Art Education at Southwest Texas State University, we are reaching out through the Internet to survey opinions about various concerns. Two of my questions are: 1. What should a teacher do when a student creates psychologically disturbing or "inappropriate" art? This question raises issues around censorship vs. the "therapeutic" value of free expression. Our local schools have rules prohibiting any gang symbolism in art, for example. But what about a depressed student reaching out through his/her art to express self destructive imagery?
2. In what ways do you think art competitions are beneficial and/or harmful to secondary art students?
