[teacherartexchange] Calif. African American Museum in Los Angeles

Date: Sun Feb 22 2009 - 16:05:22 PST

Hello. Just wanted to share an experience I had this week:
I teach K-5 art at a private school in LA, CAL. I just took my 1st graders to the Cali. African American Museum this week to see the Dewey Crumpler exhibit. He paints huge, colorful abstracts, among other things. An amazing show. Plus they have a room full of tricked out motorcycles on exhibit owned by African AMericans, so I had each kid choose a motorcycle they like, plop down in front of it with paper and pencil, and do some observational drawings. Wow! What a hit. The girls liked it, but most of my boys were so enthralled, I hardly recognized them! The museum is FREE if you do not want a tour ($2.00 per kid WITH a tour) and there is an ongoing "African Americans throughout history" exhibit too. You can have lunch on the nearby rose garden lawn or at the Science Center (all a few yards away) - Katrina Alexy
