Re: K and 1st....adding reading and discussion to art lesson

I teach K-5...560 students...art on a cart. Presently all my classes are 40
minutes each with 5 minutes between. Kindergarten and 1st are in a separate
building up the hill (can you believe the school was built this way?) which
requires a car to carry materials. Unfortunately because electives are a
time that the principal schedules grade meetings, I never have more than one
class of each grade a day. It's a real juggling act and limits some of the
things done without an art room. I recently have started reading to the
kindergarten classes or do some sort of discussion on the rug. It's hard to get to
know them otherwise and it's easier to translate on the rug for those little
ones who don't speak English yet. K's and 1st grade, especially. have so much
to tell me and have a great need to bond. I find that when they go back to
their desks, they work harder, faster, and happier when I'm not trying to
drag out the lesson. It takes a lot of patience but they are so so cute. Does
anyone have any tricks to share that they use?
