In an age of visual communication, not giving students a foundation in the
elements and principles of art is equal to not teaching the alphabet in a
reading class. Just because you can work the technology does not mean you are
visually articulate. Last year the principal asked our tech specialist to design
business cards for all the teachers. They were atrocious. No apparent layout,
text in every unreadable typeface imaginable, no balance or unity - just showing
off all the "tricks" he learned on the computer but the worst business cards I
had ever seen and I worked as a graphic artist for 15 years before becoming
an art teacher. It was the perfect example of why kids need to learn art to
skillfully use the technology.
