I think it is a good point...however...you actually solved the question
yourself. Look at the millions (many more than 21) that will come into NYC over
the next 2 weeks...also look at the jobs created...the art brought to those who
would not be able to go visit an installation like this. Also...one thing
that I thought was so sad. There was a quote from a school child, a little girl,
who had come with her classmates to see the opening. She said (and this is
paraphrased) "What a waste of money, but it is pretty too look at."
Do we ever ask these same questions about something like the Super Bowl. It
cost a lot more than 21 million to put on the Super Bowl...as
sporting/entertainment event. Or a Rock concert? I wonder if you put the number of
visitors....who will see this exhibit for free.....x the cost...it is possible it might
come out to a $1 or so per person? Also look at what Cristo is doing...the
money comes from exactly where you are saying, his proceeds from his career
over the years...so he is giving back to those who have been his patrons. He
isn't buying a 21 million dollar house, or a yacht or having a wild birthday
party...he is giving it back. How can it be a waste? That is my take..but of
course...because it is art...folks will ask the same question...while they would
never think to question those other things.
Good to use one's brain on a Sunday AM! Now...where's the cappucino!!!
