Greetings Art Educators,

This article was posted to Net Gold list:
"Test focus hurts black history"
http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=35649

........"African-American history is American
history," said Cliff Moon, diversity specialist for
the Mesa Unified School District. "My hope is, itís
not just about February, but throughout the entire
school year." .........

Here is a twist for you for Black History Month....

Take a look a blacks in Americas BEFORE Columbus.

Seventh Graders study pre-Columbian cultures (at least
in Ohio). Design a ceramic portrait lesson around the
work of the Olmec. There is scientific proof that they
were of African (maybe Nubian) decent.
What do the portrait heads of the Olmec tell us about
their culture? Kiddies make a ceramic relief
self-portrait telling about our culture. I have a
lesson plan that can be tweaked for this and so does
Woody Duncan.

I did research for three hours the other day
(online)on pre-historic "Africans" in the Americas -
it was fascinating!

Regards,

Judy Decker
