I did the birds with second graders. I showed them a powerpoint
with birds by AUdobon, Picasso, Matisse, and many contemporary painters.
Following that, I did a demonstration of looking and drawing from
observation. We had done the bleached line drawings (variety of line
and pattern) previous to this assignment, so this was more line drawing,
but this time, with a fluid brush and ink, much more calligraphic lines.
I demonstrated how to hold a brush and we discussed how much more
interesting it was to have thick and thin lines than all one width.
THese drawings were done quickly and were rather gestural. Following
the drawing of four ink brush birds, students selected their two
favorites and painted them using tempera paint. They were to mix colors
wet in wet, and we were working on complementary colors and contrast, as
I recall. You could base them on any color theory concept.
