I'm doing the coolest mural with second graders right now. We started
out with Eric Carle collages and had tons of paper left over. Following
that, we did that project where you color coffee filters with markers
and spray them. We laid three at a time (they all did 3) on a piece of
white drawing paper when they were sprayed. The left over prints from
spraying, look like flowers, giant and gorgeous flowers. So, they made
their stained glass windows with 2 of the coffee filters by folding
black paper in half and cutting out a lacy "snowflake type" design and
gluing the paper filters behind them. I have hung them in the library
windows...huge plate glass windows on the north side of the building.
They are GORGEOUS in there. I'll post a picture soon. ANyway, back to
the mural idea. With the white paper that caught the print of the
sprayed coffee filters, we are making one large flower each, embellished
with the left over Eric Carl paper and plain construction paper. They
will be all heights. We are making 12 birdhouses or feeders on tall
poles. We are also making WONDERFUl flying things (birds, bees, etc.)
with the left over coffee filter as the wings. And they are using more
Eric Carl paper combined with solid construction paper to design the
garden creatures and the bird houses. The birdhouses will all be shades
of tan, soft brown, yellow orange, and be trimmed with colors. On a
beautiful royal blue background, it should be stunning. I'll post pics
later. ALSO I have them using one of the 3 left over prints from the
sprayed filters to make their own flower to glue to a background and
add a few of their own bugs and critters to take home. We'll give the
mural to the hospital. ALl this from 3 coffee filters and some left
over Eric Carle paper!
