I wonder this sometimes myself, as I am not one who likes to stay within
a prescribed set of colors just "because" they are split complementary,
etc. I think in the end, it is to make them aware of the fact that
certain color combinations will create different moods or feelings that
are useful to be aware of. Another good reason to me, is to make them
more aware of color contrasts and harmonies that will help them to
select when to create by choice a harmonious feeling to their color, or
by contrast, when to select colors that are bright and bold and call
attention to parts of their drawings. I relate this further to them by
talking about designing a room or choosing what to wear. What IS the
look you want? Is it more than just grabbing any old crayon from the
box, any old shirt to go with your black pants, or any old throw pillows
to make a real statement in your living room? Or, how about those
buttons that you're sewing on your new coat? What look do you
want...harmonious or contrasting? One way I have of teaching color
theory lessons this year is going to be to have kids draw a picture on
the computer with black lines on white background, taking care that they
close shapes carefully, as I plan on havng them see the results of these
different schemes in their one drawing by using the fill bucket feature
in adobe photoshop. Its all about recognizing color relationships and
being able to select colors intelligently to me.
