ADVOCACY ALERT Feb 9, 2003
The State Education Department has been directed by the Regents to prepare
the REGENTS POLICY STATEMENT ON MIDDLE LEVEL EDUCATION to guide regulation
On February 1, 2003, the NYSATA Advocacy Committee met in Albany and
carefully examined the document directing the SED to prepare this policy
statement, and devised a course of action. The document, put on the State
Education Department Web Site last week, is full of opportunities for an art
educator to present data that supports the teaching of art in sequential
instruction and reinforces the value of an art program for the social and
emotional well being of the adolescent. Data must be documented and
researched based. The key is "research based." The bibliographic list is
needed by March 14, 2003.
We need to find and submit good references that are properly documented and
support the following:
1. Send us the evidence of the importance of Visual arts Education not only
to the adolescent's intellectual and educational development but also their
personal and social development.
2. Send us documented evidence that Art Education is a useful vehicle in
bringing educators, families and communities together.
3. Send us studies confirming that Visual literacy is a critical form of
communication for the adolescent.
4. Send us evidence that visual learners fall behind when their access to
visual art education is reduced… Instruction for adolescents must include
strategies that take into account all learning modalities, with respect to
those that are visual learners.
Send the bibliographic information and brief description to
Jen Childress, 28 Homestead Ave., Albany, NY 12230 email@example.com
NYSATA also needs by March 14, 2003
· Examples of exemplary middle level programs that include, support and
celebrate the visual arts components of their curriculum.
· Names and addresses of alumnae employed in the arts or employers who would
write letters that substantiate the importance of art education to their
employment, the success in their job or what they look for in employees.
Send to Connie Noelle, 12 Durmo Road, New Paltz, NY 12561
Lastly we ask that you visit the SED website and become familiar with its
structure and content. The State Education Department, with its limited
staff, is trying to keep us informed. Keep us posted about things going on in
