I hope this turns out okay for you. It sounds like you are being
reasonable, but being more restrictive would be okay (in my opinion). A
teacher's restrictions may seem like censorship, but it is important to
let students know what we value. Life itself must be valued above all.
It may be best not to display any of this particular assignment (even
other subject matter) in the hallway (to avoid any fairness issues).
As an artist, I have only once been so moved as to use a gun as my
subject.

I wanted to express my frustration with the evil use of guns in our
society. Feel free to use this image as a point of discussion if you
think it appropriate. On the other hand, you might want to wait until
you are sure you do not have to deal with controversy before extending
the discussion.
