Re: Using art as discipline.

Date: Thu Feb 28 2002 - 05:17:57 PST

I request that the kids then come in at recess to work on missed art work so
they do not get behind. gives the classroom teacher the message that I and
my art room program are important and they
do not have the heart to tell the kid that they now have to make up art
they pulled them out for whatever. so they are pulled out less often. If a
child is being disciplined I have convinced
teachers that I will put them in a safe spot - away from other kids and they
sit quiet while working on art. All ;third grades still take bathroom breaks
on the
way to art so are always 5 to 10 minutes late. So third grade is always a
class - so have just accepted it and plan around it.

I have to fight for wall space for hanging art and am tired.of it. But
will continue the more important fight for students to be in my art room.
I only demand wall space twice a year - other times catch it when I can. As
Rodney Dangerfield says "we don;t get no respect". But the fight sometimes
saps my creative energy. Gotta put on my boxing gloves and go to work.
