The fourth graders haven't used watercolors in some time. After their
Florida Writes Test, I told them that watercoloring is very passive, like
watching a good old movie. They were to draw trees, old and gnarled, some
with leaves and paint a watercolor sky. I told them about bad design
splitting the landscape in half and also about good design: showing a broad
expanse of land (earthy) or showing a broad expanse of sky (spacious, showing
the infinity of the sky). I also showed them how to do the pat stroke (dry
brush) for their bark or to show the many colors of leaves on a tree. After
a tough semester of writing constantly for their teachers this was just the
thing to pour their emotions into. The fourth graders gave me a wealth of old
trees. Watercolors are a great release of pressure, so good at this time of
year.
